Boxer’s 250th store was celebrated in grand style recently with the opening of what was also the retailer’s second store in the Johannesburg CBD. Located in one of the city’s most iconic buildings, Boxer’s milestone supermarket has made its home in the former Jeppe Street General Post Office building on the corner of Jeppe & Von Brandis Streets of Johannesburg’s inner city.
Bought and developed by the Africa Housing Company (AFHCO), the refurbishment of the Jeppe Street Post Office building is a large-scale project, which upon completion will boast a 8,000m² shopping centre on its ground and first floor, as well as over 500 elegant residential apartments above.
First opened in 1935, the building has through the years become a distinctive landmark of the city and for decades was home to the South African Postal Service and the telephone exchange. AFHCO has worked closely with heritage architects, preserving the building’s original murals, windows, timber floors and decorative stone features to uplift the building to its former glory.
When looking for an anchor tenant for the retail portion of the building, partnering with Boxer Superstores made complete sense for AFHCO. “We saw the spec of Boxer’s new design and we thought it was something very different. We felt it would be great to give Boxer the opportunity and go with something new,” explains Alan Rappoport, Retail Leasing Manager for AFHCO.
“Boxer made sense for our residential tenants in the building as well,” continues Nomfundo Mwelase, AFHCO’s Brand Manager. “We share a target market in terms of the demographics of our tenants and their shoppers, so it was a perfect fit for us to partner with Boxer,” Mwelase concludes.
Boxer occupies 2,300m2 of the available retail space, which will also include 18 kiosk shops and six larger stores ranging from 100 to 750m2 each. The remaining retail section is planned for completion by November 2018.
