Boxer Superstores and NGO Afrika Tikkun distributed food parcels to the 15 families affected by the fire in Alexandra, east of Joburg, last Sunday. Tebogo Moloto, a store manager in Alexandra, said the supermarket group was concerned that the families would have nowhere to sleep and nothing to eat. “When we heard about the fire, we knew we had to help. Our superstore was able to quickly organise and pack emergency food parcels,” he said. “Thanks to our wonderful NGO partner, we were able to deliver those parcels, along with extra blankets to the families.” Meanwhile, Joburg Emergency Management Services spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said the municipality would continue intensifying winter safety campaigns on radio, television and social media. He urged residents to be very careful when using heaters, paraffin stoves, candles and imbawula. Here are safety tips for gas heaters: Check that everything is in order and that all components are well connected. Ensure that the gas bottle is secured safely, and that there are no leaks in the pipes and the regulator is well maintained. Look out for warning of malfunction during use. Do not move the heater while in use, this can result in a gas leak or an explosion. Do not place anything over the heater that will cover it or restrict ventilation.
